The initial step in creating an original or master grating is to select the substrate material, which is usually glass or copper. The substrate material is polished to a high degree of flatness and coated with a very thin layer of aluminum. Adjusting the parallelism and equidistance of the grooves takes time, and both must be precisely controlled.
